Fiskars Group commits to climate action by joining UN Business Ambition for 1.5°C and setting science-based targets
Fiskars Group’s targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. Science-based targets are one step forward in the company’s journey towards achieving carbon neutral business, one of the three long-term sustainability commitments of the company.
Fiskars Group announces its approved science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with the most ambitious goals of the Paris Agreement – to pursue efforts to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. Fiskars Group is committed to take climate action and has also joined the United Nations Business Ambition for 1.5°C.
“Climate change affects all regions and businesses around the globe. As a company, we want to be part of the solution and take action to ensure that the everyday stays extraordinary for our future generations. Setting science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is one part of our long-term commitment to become a carbon neutral business,” states Sari Pohjonen, interim CEO, Fiskars Group.
Fiskars Group’s science-based targets have been approved by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi), a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) that independently assesses companies’ targets and ensures that they are in line with the latest climate science. SBTi mobilizes companies to set science-based targets and boost their competitive advantage in the transition to the low-carbon economy. Globally, over 460 companies have approved science-based targets, and Fiskars Group joins approximately 20 other companies in Finland who currently have joined the initiative and set approved targets.
Fiskars Group’s science-based targets are:
- Fiskars Group commits to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from own operations (scope 1 and 2) 60% by 2030 from a 2017 base year.
- Fiskars Group commits to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from upstream transportation and distribution (scope 3) 30% by 2030 from a 2018 base year.
- Fiskars Group commits that 60% of its suppliers by spend covering purchased goods and services, will have science-based targets by 2024.
“We congratulate Fiskars Group for setting emission reduction targets consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C, the most ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement,” said Alexander Farsan, global lead for Science Based Targets at World Wide Fund for Nature, one of the Science Based Targets initiative partners.
Farsan continues: “By setting targets grounded in climate science positions, Fiskars Group is setting themselves up to succeed and lead in the transition to a net-zero economy.”
Fiskars Group aims for carbon neutrality; climate action also recognized by CDP
Earlier this year, Fiskars Group launched its three long-term sustainability commitments: designing circular products and services, achieving carbon neutrality, and creating positive impact. The setting of science-based targets is one step forward in the company’s journey towards a carbon neutral business. Over the next year, Fiskars Group will lay out a time-bound climate plan including short-term targets consistent with the 1.5°C path.
Earlier this year, Fiskars Group reached leadership level and the A- rating for its climate action as scored by CDP. CDP is a global non-profit climate program for companies, cities, states and regions to measure, disclose, manage and share vital information on their environmental performance. For Fiskars Group, the A- rating further demonstrates that the company is on the right path towards a sustainable future and is focusing its sustainability efforts on the right areas.
Compared to the 2017 base year, Fiskars Group has decreased its CO2 emissions by 24% as a result from the energy saving activities and investments in renewable electricity. During 2019 the company saved 2,399 t CO2 through energy and emissions saving activities in its own operations. Currently 46% of electricity used in Fiskars Group’s manufacturing units and distribution centers is from renewable sources.
“Sustainable business sits at the heart of Fiskars Group. Our vision of creating a positive, lasting impact on our quality of life can only be fulfilled by integrating sustainability into everything we do. We strive continuously to find solutions to minimize our climate impact throughout our value chain and work closely with our partners to reduce negative impact,” concludes Sari Pohjonen.
